Tim Conway’s appearance on Johnny Carson’s show started in a hilariously awkward way. The comedic legend had an unusual and hysterical beginning to his interview on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Watch the short clip to see Tim and Johnny’s laugh-out-loud bit.

Some people are naturally funny and can make anything and everything hilarious. Tim Conway was one of those people. Throughout his illustrious and storied career, he demonstrated that he could get entire studio audiences without saying a word. Often, he would have audiences and even his castmates cracking up in laughter. He did all of it while making it appear effortless.

In a clip posted on YouTube, Tim shows how he could even use silence to make people laugh out loud. Tim does not even have to say a word to cause laughter. Johnny said as much about him in his introduction before Tim appeared on the show.

“Now my first guest, who I can look at him, and for some reason, get the giggles,” Johnny said.

After he’s introduced, Tim hurriedly makes his way to the couch, running over as quickly as possible. Then, Johnny and Tim do a hilarious bit, using awkward, prolonged silences to get the studio audience rolling with laughter.

Johnny and Tim mention that they are friends, have known one another for a long time and shouldn’t need notes or a pre-interview for their on-air discussions. But, of course, the two titans of comedy then use this for laughs.

Johnny and Tim sit on the stage and say absolutely nothing to one another. It’s as if, even though they consider themselves buddies, they cannot come up with something to talk about, making for the worst thing possible in live TV: dead air and silence.

Eventually, their awkward interaction passes, and the rest of the interview is hilarious, much like everything Tim Conway had done in his career.
