Kirk Cameron Recalls the Hilarious Story of His First Kiss with His Wife
Actor, writer and Christian Kirk Cameron recently shared the hilarious story of the first kiss with the woman who would eventually become his wife.
Without a doubt, marriage is one of the best things about life. It’s a beautiful institution, a relationship of two people who love, cherish and support one another. When one person is hurt and struggling, the other can provide comfort, healing and peace of mind. A healthy marriage is also a place where stability and peace – two things severely lacking today – are abundant.
But before standing at the altar, exchanging vows and saying, “I do,” there is a period of dating that can range in length. Regardless of how long before the big question was popped, most people usually remember their last first kiss – the first time they kissed the person who became their husband or wife. Kirk does, and it wasn’t exactly the picture-perfect moment often depicted in movies.
In a clip posted on YouTube, Kirk recalls the hilarious story of his first kiss with the woman he would marry. He also mentions how incredibly nervous he was about kissing her because it happened in an episode of his sitcom Growing Pains.
Kirk’s wife, Chelsea, was an actress who played Mike Seaver’s girlfriend on the show.
As he explains, that week’s particular episode called for his character to give her character a big kiss right before he walks off stage. That was a detail that gave Kirk major anxiety. So, throughout rehearsal that week in the run-up to the taping of the episode, he would quickly skip over that detail, being a young man full of nerves.
So, the big day, when they record the episode for TV, arrives, and Kirk knows he cannot simply skip over it this time. So, he comes up with an unconventional way to overcome his nerves about the kiss.
“I said, ‘Hold on just a second,’ and I ran backstage to the first aid kit in the prop department,” he said. “I started rummaging through it and found a tube of Anbesol. That’s that gum-numbing gel that you put on a toothache, like Novocaine. And I put it on my lips, like it was, like, Carmex, like Vaseline, like chapstick.”
Kirk returned to the stage after covering his mouth with that numbing substance.
“And I came out, I said, ‘Alright, ready!’ Kirk said. “And we did the whole scene, I said, ‘Don’t forget about me, I’m coming back.’ I leaned in, I gave her a big kiss, you know, just planted one right on her.
Of course, she reacted with much surprise.
“And she looked at me, and all of a sudden, her lips are starting to tingle, and she starts licking her lips, like, ‘What is this goo on my lips?’ All of a sudden, her tongue starts to go numb. Her whole mouth starts to freeze up. She didn’t know what to say.”
Kirk had the most hilarious response for why she was feeling that way.
“I just said, ‘Sorry, cut! We need to stop. I forgot to warn her: this is the effect I have on women when I kiss them; it’s paralyzing.’”
