Southern Raised Bluegrass Sings Johnny Cash Classic 'Sixteen Tons'

Listen to Southern Raised Bluegrass play the classic song ‘Sixteen Tons’ in this music video.

“Some people say a man is made outta mud, a poor man's made outta muscle and blood
Muscle and blood and skin and bones, a mind that's a-weak and a back that's strong
You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt
St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go, I owe my soul to the company store”

What an amazing performance by Southern Raised Bluegrass! Their harmonies are lovely, and they have a perfect arrangement of instruments. And the music video is beautifully shot in the great outdoors.

“The bass is fantastic. Great arrangement, great harmony, and the violin is superb!” comments one person on YouTube after watching the video.

“I have chills listening to this,” another person writes online. “Beautiful rendition of a great song. Well done!”

The musicians who make up Southern Raised Bluegrass are Lindsay, Emily, Matt, and Alex. They are a family band from the Ozark Mountains.

According to their YouTube page, the band is “committed to the Lord, each other, and bringing their music to the people. There is a warmth and realness about them that draws you in, making them one of the best, most unique sounds on the scene. They have the distinct ability to cross genres, winning the hearts of all who hear them.”

The song ‘Sixteen Tons’ was written by Merle Travis about a coal miner, based on life in mines in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. It was first released in July 1947, and has been covered by many popular artists. In 1987, Johnny Cash released a country version of the song on his album Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town.
