Dustin Nickerson Remembers When Summers Was Very Different
Dustin Nickerson remembers when summers were very different. The popular comedian shared what summer vacation was like when he was growing up, and they sound vastly different from today. Watch the short but hysterical clip to hear Dustin describe a time and events that would likely sound very foreign to kids today.
Summer is, I think, most people would agree, the best season of the entire year. Sure, it can be a little hot and humid at times, and you have to lather on the sunscreen and the bug repellent to protect against the sun and those pesky mosquitoes. But that’s the best time to get outside and enjoy all kinds of activities. Who doesn’t enjoy swimming or visiting theme parks? Also, summer is the vacation season.
However, way back in the 90s and even the early 2000s (It really wasn’t that long ago, right?)things in the summer were much different. We didn’t have all these devices, screens and social media wasn’t a thing. People couldn’t track our every move. Kids who were out of school for the summer back then, and even before that, had a lot more freedom to do things. They could experience things and maybe even get into a little trouble here and there.
That was certainly Dustin’s experience with summer growing up, as he explained in a clip posted on YouTube.
“When we were kids, summer would hit, and that would affect our parents’ life in no way whatsoever,” he said. “They went to work. They didn’t go to work. They did whatever they did. They weren’t supervising us. There was no sidewalk chalk. There was no crafts. If we were lucky, they would turn the sprinkler on.”
Later in the clip, he mentioned that instead of being monitored and given structured activities, he had plenty of freedom and free time to do this and that.
“And you would go out, and you would have this adventure,” he added. “You had, like, 10 hours, and you would meet strangers. And you would discover weird things in the woods, and you would get in a fight, and you would come home, and your parents knew none of it.”
There’s something to be said for having that kind of freedom and letting kids have these experiences and figure things out on their own. Most children today have no idea what that is like.
Galatians 5:1 “Christ has truly made us free: then keep your free condition and let no man put a yoke on you again.”
