Band’s Cover of 'Always Be My Baby' Is Fantastic

The Dwayene Gretzky band's cover of “Always Be My Baby” is fantastic, hands down. It’s one of the best Mariah Carey covers we’ve ever heard. Play the video to sing along.

With about 6 back-up singers all in perfect sync and an amazing lead singer, Chynna Lewis, the "Always Be My Baby" Mariah Carey cover sounds incredible. All of the instruments, from the piano to the guitars, are on point. It couldn’t be more perfect.

"Always Be My Baby" by Mariah Carey was the No. 1 song when it came out in 1996 and was Mariah’s 11th No. 1 hit. Mariah co-wrote the song with Jermaine Dupri.

Cover of “Always Be My Baby” is a Wonderful Ode to Mariah Carey

Mariah previously said, "The background vocals are an important part of the whole picture for me. That's why I like to do them myself a lot of the time, or at least initially I'll lay down the tracks… It's easy for me to match my voice… To me, on those kinds of records, the hook is really important.”

The song is about a woman’s feelings after a breakup. Some of the lyrics to “Always Be My Baby” are:

I know that you'll be back, boy
When your days and your nights get a little bit colder, oh
I know that you'll be right back, baby
Oh, baby, believe me, it's only a matter of time, time

The Dwayne Gretzky band’s background harmonies are what make the song special. The group has a clear dedication to creating the kind of sounds that the original song does, and it provides a beautiful variety of voices, making it sound fresh.

The performance feels so vibrant and warm, you can’t help snapping a finger to it or singing along. Seeing all of the musicians have fun as they perform makes you feel like part of the gang. All in all, it’s a wonderful ode to Mariah Carey.
