People can spot clichés from a mile away. Politicians and athletes, for whatever reason, seem to love them, as they use them constantly. However, most people do not enjoy hearing clichés, overused phrases or sayings. Many would argue that doing so shows a lack of creativity and original thought. Simply relying on a coined, well-known and terribly overused phrase to express a thought or feeling could very well be interpreted as lazy.

But sometimes those clichés and adages do work best, right? Things become clichés because there is, or was, at one time, some truth to them. If there weren’t, they would never have gained popularity, with everyone saying them and becoming well acquainted with them. So, yes, clichés are boring and tired, but in some cases, they do actually work and can still be extremely funny.

In a clip posted on YouTube, one woman says she believes these are phrases many Southern dads use regularly. However, I would argue that most people, regardless of where they grew up or where their father was from, have likely heard at least a couple of these from their father. And if not, they could likely imagine hearing these sayings coming out of their father’s mouth.

“Never trust a man whose truck’s too clean on the inside,” she said. “Something’s off about him.”

“Don’t throw nothing away,” she added. “One day, you’re going to need that exact random piece of metal.”

“Ain’t no need to buy a gym membership when you got a garage full of heavy stuff,” she said.
