Bob Newhart Cracks Up Johnny Carson During Hilarious Interview

At the beginning of this video, Johnny Carson invites Bob out to join him, and instantly Bob begins to make jokes about this being his last “Don Carlson Show.” The two laugh about how Johnny mispronounced his name. They begin to talk about Bob’s wife, and he begins to hold on to Johnny's arm, begging him not to go. The two chuckle.

The men begin to laugh, looking back on previous shows they had taped together. It is comical watching Bob try to talk about the difference between England and other foreign countries. Johnny asks Bob how he did in England, and Bob said that he did “very well.” He proceeds to share his joke about how he would not tell you if he did not do well, l though. Then, he goes on to say that he did not do well in Australia. The two crack up, and he says that it is “another of what they call the English-speaking countries.” The two of them and the audience crack up.

The Two Reminisce Over Old Memories

The two laugh about the old interviews and how scattered they were, and then the second clip is about Bob joking since he was working with a chimp for a movie. The clip involves Johnny making jokes, asking, how could a chimp truly concentrate well because he does not have a wife and children and his career, “he has a banana.” Everyone cracks up. 

The two of them return to the comedy. Bob tells about how they held a contest to get a movie title nationwide, and they selected “Bob.” They laugh so hard. The two reminisce on a time when Bob and Jenny were out late at Johnny’s place and had young children. Jenny tried to get home, and the next day Johnny sent a cot for Jenny to take a nap in the living room. Then Bob does a comedy bit about a Hungarian who goes to the opera and sings from the perspective of having always been in the highest possible seats. He starts to sing opera quietly in the back of his throat, and Johnny is laughing so hard. 

This 1992 treasure of an interview is so enjoyable. It will feel like you are back in the 90s, getting a good laugh with these hilarious men. This reminds us that God created laughter as good medicine.
