Teen’s Impeccable Voice Impresses Judges With ‘Maybe It Was Memphis’

One young woman wowed the judges on The Voice with her terrific performance of an early 90s country hit.

Most people seeking to make it deep into the competition on programs like America’s Got Talent, American Idol and The Voice, audition with more modern, well-known songs, hoping to connect with audiences and judges alike. But Grace West, a 19-year-old aspiring country musician, went back several decades for “Maybe It was Memphis” by Pam Tillis.

Singing and playing the guitar, Grace began her performance on the dimly lit stage with the back of all four judges' seats facing her. However, it wasn’t long before she got one and then a second interested judge to swing around for her.

She beautifully sang the song’s first verse and as she reached the chorus, things turned in her favor, literally. Grace only gets a few words into the chorus before country music superstar Blake Shelton decides he’s heard enough and turns his chair for the young woman. Niall Horan, the former One Direction member, follows Blake’s lead seconds later.

The judges, particularly Blake, enjoy Grace’s dazzling performance. He mouths the words of the Pam Tillis hit. Kelly, who didn’t turn for Grace, also sings along and even sways back and forth in her chair.

The judges and the audience give Grace a well-deserved and hearty round of applause at the conclusion of her performance.

Niall and Blake gush about Grace in their pitches to try and convince her to join their team.

“Your voice is impeccable,” Niall said. “And so many, like, sweet tones. You are such a real, born storyteller.”

Blake, though, very much relates to Grace. His road to fame is like hers and he uses that to his advantage in his pitch to her. He mentions how he also left home for Nashville at an early age and worked at a publishing company, but secretly yearned to be on country radio.

“I actually hear Pam Tillis in your voice,” Blake said

In the end, Grace does what most people likely expected and chooses Blake as her coach.

Psalm 40:3 “And he has put a new song in my mouth, even praise to our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.”
