John Crist Tackles Society's Obsession with Tracking This
John Crist has tackled society’s obsession with tracking their health and other vital signs. Many people have become addicted to tracking and monitoring this part of their lives, which he claims is keeping people from actually living their lives. Watch this short, but powerful and insightful clip to hear John’s take on society’s fixation on closely monitoring this thing.
Everyone wants to be healthy, and of course, that is a good desire and a worthwhile goal. And nearly everyone can become healthier, this or that, cut out this or that, which would no doubt improve our overall health. We all have areas we can be better in terms of our health, for sure.
Thanks to technological advances, there are a handful of devices that can monitor your health. They will give you readouts and updates on your hours slept last night, your weight, calories burned, your resting heart rate, and much more. Not only will those devices and apps give you information, but they will also give you a detailed plan of attack, ways to improve this and that metric.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with having this information and watching over it. However, many people have gone overboard with it and have become addicted to checking and improving their numbers. That’s when it becomes a problem, as John points out in a clip posted on YouTube.
“People wear those things on their wrist,” he said. “People have a ring that like tells them if they’re sleeping well, tells them if they’re, like, groggy. Like, you can just get overly obsessed with tracking.”
Later in the clip, he points out that people have become addicted to this “hyper optimization of your health” and asks why, if you’re just living to improve those numbers.
He makes a good point. If we’re just doing this and that simply to get a better report from our Oura Ring, and we’re miserable and not living life, what is the point?
1 Timothy 4:8 “For the training of the body is of profit for a little, but a religion is of profit in every way, giving hope for the life which now is, and for that which is to come.”
