Nearly everywhere you look, you’ll find covers. Today, musical covers are plentiful, easily found wherever you listen to music – the radio, Spotify, Pandora or Apple Music. Also, shows like American Idol, The Voice and America’s Got Talent are full of cover performances, with nearly every musical performance of some tune. If you enjoy covers, you are most certainly in luck.
However, the problem with covers, at least in my view, is that 99 percent of them sound just like the original. The covers usually don’t deviate too much from the sound of the first version. One could argue that many covers are basically carbon copies, duplicates of the original. No one wants that, right? Give us something different. Try something new. Take a song in a completely different direction, give it a wholly unique sound. Even if you fail, we’ll still appreciate the fact that you tried.
Trying something entirely new is precisely what one young man did in a clip posted on YouTube. He played the theme song to the beloved cartoon “Winnie the Pooh.” But instead of playing it the way everyone is familiar with, he took a much different approach to the song. He gave a rock makeover, and, honestly, it’s not too bad. Sure, it’s a significant departure, but so what? A little change can be good at times, and I think this is one of those instances when it works.
Even if you don’t like this young man’s take, and think Pooh, Piglet, Tiger and the rest of the Hundred Acre Wood gang would loathe and despise this version, you still have to appreciate that he did try something different. I mean, who even thinks of turning a theme song to a children’s cartoon into a hard rock song?
Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
