Anjelah Johnson-Reyes has shared how her comedy career started in a church. The popular comedian discussed how she got her start, how she had never considered pursuing stand-up comedy, and how that soon changed because of what happened in a church. Everybody has an origin story. Regardless of who they are – a legendary, beloved president, a world-class athlete, an iconic actor or the man standing on the corner – everyone has an origin, events that led to where they are currently. Personally, that is the most interesting part of any successful person. What did they do and how did they get to where they are? Who wouldn’t want to know that?
Our present circumstances are a direct result of our past. The choices we make and the events and experiences we go through mold and shape us, directly leading us to the present. If we don’t like our present and wonder how we got here, look to our past and the choices and decisions we made. If we want to change our present circumstances and desire a better, different future, we must make choices that lead to that result.
In a clip posted on YouTube, Anjelah shared how she became one of the biggest names in stand-up comedy, what led her into comedy and the surprising job she had before becoming a comic.
“I used to be a professional cheerleader for the Oakland Raiders, at the time,” she said. “Yes, now, they’re Las Vegas. Back when we were in Oakland, I was a cheerleader for the Raiders, and we did calendars.”
She mentioned that she used the money she made from selling her calendar to fund her move to Los Angeles. She had dreams of becoming a dramatic actress, but those changed when she heard about a class offered at a church.
“I took a joke writing class at a church, and that’s how I started doing stand-up,” she said.
While in that free class at a church, she wrote a bit that went viral, which is what led her into stand-up comedy.
