Tom Petty Classic Gets a Faith-Filled Christian Music Makeover

Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'" has lived in my heart for years, and it gets a faith-filled Christian music makeover that I can’t believe. It is so incredible. 

Ever since it was released in 1989 on his debut solo album, Full Moon Fever, I've heard something different every time it came on the radio. While Tom Petty wrote it after driving along Ventura Boulevard in California, I've always imagined it as a song about laying down the weight of the past, letting go of shame, and finally finding freedom. The song became Petty's biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit, climbing to No. 7 in January 1990, while also reaching No. 1 on Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart.

Then I stumbled across a young worship artist named Joel Jackson. With a head full of fiery red curls and a voice that somehow feels both gritty and worshipful, Joel stood in the middle of a church sanctuary and asked a simple question: What if ‘Free Fallin’ were a Christian song?

I wasn't prepared for what happened next. The familiar melody remained, but the words became an anthem of surrender and redemption. Suddenly, a song I'd loved for decades felt brand new and so fresh and freeing.  I found myself singing along with tears in my eyes.

She’s a good girl, prays with her mama
Loves Jesus, got a Bible verse tattoo
She’s a good girl, sings along with Chris Tomlin
Tells her boyfriend, maybe he can have Jesus too.

And then he gets to the chorus line:

Do you wanna be free
Cuz God’s calling

And the best part is how Joel's story makes the moment even more powerful. In his bio, he wrote: "My name is Joel Jackson and Jesus saved me from suicide and unbelief so now I sing songs for him," he shares. And you can hear his passion in every note. After watching several of his videos, I couldn’t help but smile. Joel sings and shares freely as someone who's been rescued, and shares how he knows exactly Who pulled him out of the pit.

I love that God still does this. He takes the familiar and makes it new. He redeems stories. He redeems people. Sometimes, He even takes a song we've loved for decades and gently turns our eyes toward heaven. Now every time I hear ‘Free Fallin',’ I can't help but smile. Somewhere between Tom Petty's timeless classic and Joel Jackson's worshipful reimagining, I'm reminded what true freedom really sounds like. It’s a must share!
