Forgiveness Isn’t What You Think (Biblical Truth)

Braden Pedersen explores Ephesians 4:31–32 and gives a clear, compassionate look at what Christian forgiveness really is, and what it isn’t. This devotional examines how bitterness hardens us, how forgiveness releases the debt rather than minimizes the hurt, and how the cross models forgiving fully, freely, and at cost.

Read — Read Ephesians 4:31–32 slowly. Notice Paul’s command to “put away” bitterness and to be tenderhearted and forgiving as God in Christ forgave you.

Reflect — Ask honestly: Am I replaying this offense in my mind? Am I asking God to deal with it, or am I carrying it alone? Reflect on how the cross changes the way you view the offender and the debt.

Respond — Short prayer: Father, you know the wounds and names that still sting. Help me forgive as I have been forgiven. Free me from bitterness, soften my heart, and teach me to entrust justice to You. Amen.

Reveal — Take one concrete step this week to embody forgiveness: release the memory in prayer and refuse to rehearse it, set loving boundaries where needed, or extend a simple, honest word of forgiveness or compassion when it’s safe and appropriate. Let your mercy be a small, visible reflection of the gospel.
