What’s with my teen and their disrespectful tone?

Helping your teen understand respect is important but constantly focusing on their tone is invalidating and shuts them down, guaranteeing they’ll stop sharing with you or become more defiant.

Their tone is mostly unconscious and a function of the adolescent brain growth, creating a mild state of fear, fight, or flight. Taking the tone less personally and creating emotional safety + curiosity helps your teen to better express what’s behind the tone.

Your teen is literally getting a new brain and learning to manage new complexity and expression. They need your mentorship and patience in that messy process, not criticism or condemnation.

Today's Devotional

A Prayer to Give Grace to Moms This Mother's Day (and Every Day) - Your Daily Prayer - May 10
