Denzel Washington Tells T.D. Jakes 'The Only Solution Was Prayer' After Will Smith's Oscar Slap

Critically-acclaimed performer Denzel Washington sits down with Pastor T.D. Jakes for an open discussion about the 2022 Academy Awards.

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony took place on March 27, 2022 and it seems the whole world is talking about the show. Sadly, the chatter is not all about the winners and their professional accomplishments.

During the ceremony, host Chris Rock appeared on stage. While performing a bit, he took aim at actor Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Chris said, “Jada I love you, ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it.”

The quote is in reference to the Demi Moore film, G.I. Jane, in which Demi famously shaved her head for the role. In recent years, Jada has sported a shorter hair do because of her battle with alopecia.

Will did not take lightly to this comment and walked onto the stage during the live ceremony and slapped Chris across the face. The slap reverberated through the audience and all across social media.

Just moments later, Will Smith won his very first Oscar for his role as Richard Williams in the film, King William. As the tears flowed, Will mentioned that right after the slap, Denzel Washington pulled him aside and said, “At your highest moment be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.”

The 67-year-old actor is known for his roles in films such as Glory, Remember The Titans and Philadelphia. And Denzel is no stranger to awards having won 2 Oscars himself.

Days later, Denzel sat down with Pastor T.D. Jakes at the 2022 International Leadership Summit and briefly spoke about that infamous moment.

“For whatever reason, the devil got a hold of that circumstance,” Denzel remarked.

He went on to say, “I don’t know all the ins and out of this situation but I know the only solution was prayer.” And I think we can all agree that prayer is exactly what this world needs.

Psalms 4:1 “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: you have enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy on me, and hear my prayer.”
