Could Cat Purrs Make You Happier or Healthier?

Who does not love animals? They provide us with friendship and because of the strange and funny things they do, often free entertainment. But did you know that some of them may even make us healthier, both physically and mentally?

That’s right!

Yes, according to one video posted to YouTube, your cat (Sorry, dog people!) could actually help alleviate your anxiety and even assist in healing you physically.

The video, as part of its “Fun Cat Fact of the Day" claims that as a result of the frequency of cat purrs, they can alleviate anxious feelings and get this, even heal physical wounds. A cat, the video points out, purrs at a frequency between 25 and 140 hertz.

The clip mentions that studies have “found that the same frequency aids in the healing process of physical wounds and anxiety.” An article from BBC Future concurs with the video's statements. Specifically, the article mentions how a cat’s purrs may affect bone health.

“Purrs at a frequency of 25-100 Hz correspond with established healing frequencies in therapeutic medicine for humans," said Gary Weitzman, a vet, and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society. "Bone responds to 25-50Hz and skin and soft tissues to around 100Hz, according to researchers."

The article goes on to point out that simply owning a feline may also reduce “the risk of stroke or heart disease by as much as one-third.” This is because petting a cat is a calming activity.

As if you needed any more reasons to bring a sweet, little furry kitten or full-grown cat into your house, they actually provide us with a medical benefit. Much like the video suggests, a happy, healthy cat could mean a happier, healthier you!

Genesis 2:19 “And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them: and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.”
