Young Woman’s Song About Her Brother Strikes a Chord with Carrie Underwood

A young woman’s song about her brother strokes a chord with Carrie Underwood. Everyone knows about sibling rivalry—the endless teasing, the fights over the front seat, the constant push to outdo each other. It’s a familiar kind of love, tangled up in competition and camaraderie.

But for Nina Daig, being a sister looks different. Her brother Joey is three years older, but in many ways, he’s forever three years old.  A brain injury at birth changed the trajectory of his life, yet in doing so, it also shaped hers. While most siblings battle over silly things, Nina has spent her life seeing the world through Joey’s eyes—where joy isn’t measured by accomplishments but by presence, by love, by simply being.

And that’s what makes this moment so sacred. Standing in front of Carrie Underwood, Nina didn’t just audition—she opened her heart. She spoke of the fears that held her back about singing in front of people and the insecurities that whispered, “You’re not good enough.” But then, she spoke of Joey.

“Since I was little, I always loved singing, standing on the bed with the CD player going,” she shared. “I just have a lot of insecurities and started telling myself that it’s not good enough and no one wants to hear it.”

She hesitated to chase her dream, doubting whether her voice mattered. But then she thought of Joey—of how he lives fully, without fear of judgment. “He doesn’t care what people think. He’s just happy that he’s him, and he accepts himself fully. I still think I’m learning from him in a lot of ways,” she said.

And so, she sang Average Joe—a song about the brother who has been teaching her, all along, how to truly live. And in that moment, Carrie Underwood wasn’t the only one deeply moved.

All of the judges were profoundly moved by her song and her voice. Luke Brayan said she had the makings of a strong “crazy good songwriter.”

Carrie couldn’t help but whisper into her soul. “I think it’s very brave of you to come and not only share your voice with us but also your song. Was every note perfect? No. But we felt your heart,” she said. Because at the end of the day, that’s what truly matters. Not perfection. Not flawless notes. But a heart is willing to be seen, willing to tell a story, willing to pour out love in a song.

And just like that, Nina received a yes from all three judges. She wasn’t just moving forward in the competition—she was stepping into the very thing Joey had unknowingly taught her all along: the beauty of embracing who you are.
