‘House of David’ Actor Michael Iskander on How He Found Acting and His Spiritual Journey
“House of David” actor Michael Iskander shared how he became an actor, his spiritual journey and how his view of the Bible has changed during a wide-ranging interview. Watch the clip to hear what the young man who played David in “House of David” had to say.
“House of David” is an Amazon series that follows the life of the biblical figure as a shepherd boy, his taking down and killing of the Philistine giant Goliath and his anointing as king of Israel. In the show, the shepherd boy and eventual king is played by Michael Iskander. The young man recently sat down and talked about several subjects, including his spiritual journey, what he hopes people take away from the series and how he got into acting.
Michael's story of how he got into acting has to be one of the strangest ways anyone got into anything. As he explains in a clip posted on YouTube, his acting career started when he switched seats in history class as a high school sophomore. After switching seats, he ended up next to one of his buddies who was in the choir.
“And at that time, it happened to be that the director told all the students, ‘Hey, if you guys get some boys to audition for the choir, ‘cause we’re low on boys, then I’ll give you $10.’”
Wanting to help his buddy, Michael auditioned. His friend got the money, and Michael got involved in choir, musicals and acting – and eventually found a career.
Later in the clip, Michael explains that learning to play David changed how he views Scripture. He said that it has become much more real to him since playing the biblical figure who killed Goliath.
“Now, I view it from a point of view as just human beings,” he said. “And so, I put the context of that time, of these people into this story. Like, I was reading the story of Samson with that context, and it puts a whole different perspective on the Bible. I think it makes it that much more interesting to read and discover. Personally, I love it, and it's so fun as an actor for your job to be discovering more about the Bible.”
Michael also mentioned playing David has changed him spiritually. He says that this role has challenged him to rely upon and trust God more and that he understands that the entire reason for the series is to bring glory and honor to His name.
“Reading that every day, it takes a lot of trust in the Lord to do something like this,” he said. ‘Cause there are challenges. There’s a lot of challenges, but to trust Him and to acknowledge Him and to forget the fact that you’re making a TV show, and it’s really fun, and get your makeup and hair; it’s all fun and cool. But the reason is to glorify Him and to honor Him, to put Him first.”
