Lake of Fire - literal or symbolic?

While most Christians take the Lake of Fire to be literal due to what mainstream doctrine teaches, is it possible that it is in fact symbolic? We are encouraged to test all things, but discouraged if we find something that disagrees with mainstream doctrine... so then what's the point of testing ALL things?
