On the first night of the feast and succeeding nights, after the sun had set, two great lamps were light in the courts of the temple. The lamps ere meant to recall the pillar of cloud and fire that had accompanied the people in their wanderings in the desert. The pillar of cloud and fire symbolized several important truths.
