Church Helps American Idol Contestant Kai Make It To Hollywood Week

19-year-old American Idol contestant Kai the Singer returns to the stage for Hollywood Week.

When we first met this South Carolina resident, she brought judge Lionel Ritchie to tears with her ‘My Girl’ audition.

Now, she’s back to continue fighting for her spot on the popular singing competition. But the journey to Hollywood wasn’t easy. Growing up was hard for Kai. As a child, her family was in and out of shelters and even lived in their car at one point.

There are currently eight people in her household and not everyone has a bed. When she couldn’t come up with the money to make it to the first audition, her church rallied around this talented teen. They raised the money and even gave Kai a guitar.

“Everybody says nothing good comes out of Kingstree. So, when my church raised funds for me to get to the first audition, I was lost for words. They’re amazing people.” Now, her church is continuing to support her on this musical journey and the gesture isn’t lost on Kai.

Just to have them backing me, it does something to my confidence, actually. Because I’m even smiling more now.” Kai is determined to make them proud and there’s no doubt that the church is cheering for her rendition of "Lost Without You" by Freya Ridings.

Week after week, Kai continues to prove why she belongs on American Idol. From her incredible voice to her humble roots, this young woman is certainly a front-runner in the competition.
