Carrie Underwood felt like she was praying while she recorded her new Gospel album. And this story behind her latest album is so good!

God has given every open door to Carrie to use her gift of song. Now that God has given her center stage around the world, she doesn’t want it for her own glory but for God’s. After releasing her latest album over Easter, Carrie Underwood says she felt like she was praying during the recording process of the Gospel album.

When she was asked what she wanted her fans to hear in her voice, she responded that she wanted it to be a prayer. Carrie didn’t the album to be about her but about God, about the love God has for his people, and about the unconditional love God has for each of us.

Carrie says most of the songs on the album were songs she got to sing in a choir at church. Normally, when an artist gets to work creating a piece of art, it’s a daunting task that takes every bit of creative energy as they pour their heart, soul, and spirit into the project. But for Carrie, creating this album was a moment of peace, not only for her but she knew it would give God’s everlasting peace to every listener.

Carrie said, “Everybody’s at home and not dealing with the crazy distractions of busyness of everyday life. We’re home, we were at home.” She added, “There was a lot of heaviness of the past year but there was also a lot of silver linings. I mean, I got to sit in one place and watch my boys grow up.”

Carrie realized in the midst of the pandemic, the silver lining for many was the ability to come home and be home with family. But the irony of the words, “come home” was not lost on her as many lost their lives to the virus. She knew the gospel track, ‘Softly and Tenderly’ with the lyrics, “Come home, come home. Ye who are weary come home. Earnestly, tenderly Jesus is calling. Calling, "O sinner come home;” that she sang at the Grammys in the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting also needed to be on the album. Her decision in including this worship song definitely speaks to the fact that God knows how tender we are to his love.

Carrie’s new album and her faith in Jesus is a bridge to unbelievers who hear her voice and to her generation about the love of our mighty savior who loves us just as we are.

Oh, Carrie, God has certainly blessed you and we thank you for obeying the call to use your gifts to reach our hearts for Christ. We also thank you for the passion you have to sing about our mighty Jesus and we thank you for your “prayer.”
