'Have A Little Talk With Jesus' David Phelps Sings Classic Hymn

Listen to David Phelps sing the classic hymn, ‘Have a Little Talk with Jesus.’

David Phelps gained fame when he sang tenor in the well-known Gaither Vocal Band. He has a wife that he met while in college at Baylor University. Together, they have four kids and live on a farm near Nashville. He has released a bunch of solo albums and live-recorded specials in his 25+ years as a singer.

David also appeared in specials with the Gaither Vocal Band when he wasn’t officially a member. His ‘official’ time with the group lasted from ‘97-’05 and then again from ‘10-’17. Even still, he joins the group from time to time to perform.

They recorded this performance of ‘Have a Little Talk with Jesus’ in his barn at David’s family farm as a part of his live concert called ‘David Phelps’ Hymnal: A Journey of Faith Through Hymns.’ David’s version is so upbeat and fun -- I wish I was there for the live performance!

‘Have a Little Talk with Jesus’ was originally written by Cleavant Derricks in the 1930s and recorded himself singing it almost 50 years later with some family members. Plenty of singers recorded covers of the hymn, including Elvis Presley.

I once was lost in sin but Jesus took me in
And then a little light from Heaven filled my soul
He bathed my heart in love and wrote my name above
And just a little talk with Jesus made me whole

From just reading the lyrics, it seems like this song might think it’s slow and emotional. BUT you can tell from the singers and the crowd that this is just an all-around fun hymn. David even brought an audience member up on stage to sing the bass line for fun. What a wonderful performer to watch!

The righteous cry, and the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalm 34:17-18
