Being an optimist today can be rather difficult. The nation seems divided for every reason possible: politics, ethnicity, and even religion at times.
Being an optimist in a fallen world is challenging enough. Being an optimist in today’s America is truly a challenge.
The late Billy Graham has left the world with another of meaningful sermons and lessons that will surely stand the test of time.
In this classic clip, he opens up with the 102 Psalm, verses 6 and 7.
“I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.
I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.”
(Psalm 102: 6-7)
These verses are important because he highlights sometimes we are places we usually are not, such as an owl being in the desert. There aren’t many that live in the desert.
He also draws a contrast between being an optimist and pessimist. His example was of two convicts looking out of a jail cell. One saw the bars, and the other saw the stars.
The difference he highlights with the comparison is hope.
A year from the date of his sermon, a New York taxi driver asked him an interesting question. The reverend was asked if there was anything to cheer about where he came from.
“Certainly. There’s many things to cheer about,” was his response.
He went on to cite four instances where Jesus said to be of good cheer. This is important when we face obstacles in life that put us in metaphorical prisons. Will we see the bars or will we see the stars?
What do we do when we are faced with situations that baffle us? More importantly, who do we lean on?
Life is bound to give each and every one of us difficulty, and sometimes the difficulties will be too much for one person to handle alone.
What then if we can’t rely on ourselves?
Reverend Graham spent time discussing the wonderful features of Jesus, what He accomplished in life and death, and resurrection. He conquered death.
Through Jesus’ power we can overcome adverse situations.
We might be an owl out in the desert, feeling like we are somewhere we do not belong, or things are happening that we would rather not occur.
Somehow and some way, God can make a path in the wilderness. We have to do our part and trust in Him, and lean on Him. He will make a way.
