'Dancing Doc' Puts Smiles On Kid's Faces Every Day With His Moves

It’s so difficult to think of children having to battle difficult medical issues. This “Dancing Doc” is determined to bring a smile to his pediatric patients one dance at a time. Sometimes laughter truly is the best medicine!

Tony Adkins is a pediatric physician’s assistant specializing in neurosurgery. Working out of Children’s Hospital of Orange County, CA, P.A. Tony often sees patients at their worst. His first “prescription” for dancing came after one of his patients was fighting post-op depression and not wanting to get out of bed. Tony knew he had to do something and began to think about what children connect with – music and dancing. The next day he saw the boy, they had a full dance party. Seeing the boy’s Mom light up and experience joy with her son again was also a special moment for Dr. Adkins. He knew that he was on to something!

“There’s nothing better than seeing a smile on my patient’s faces or to hear them laugh — it’s self-care for me too," Adkins added. "Nothing is more important than the health of a child, and I am so lucky to play an integral role in that."

The families of ill children often suffer silently beside them. Having that moment of release and happiness does so much good for the soul! Being able to encourage and uplift with something as simple as dancing brought Tony closer to his patients than before.

“Being in neurosurgery we see some of the worst things that can possible take place for a kid. I have been blessed with a sound mind and heart to uplift these little kids. Each one of them gets a special treatment from me all the time. They are my inspiration and my motivation to be the best provider I can be.”

Thank God for this caring doctor who uses his gifts and abilities to help others through difficult times!
