One Year After Tornado Kills 27 People, a Community Comes Together

On April 27, 2011 the Phil Campbell Church of God was completely wiped away by a disaster that swept through town killing 27 people. Despite the tragic nature of the event, the church members remained strong in their faith. The congregation purchased a building in town, and renovated it so that it could become their new church building. According to Pastor Chris Burns, attendance at his church has tripled since the rebuild. On April 27, 2012 (one year after the disaster) the Phil Campbell Church of God hosted a community church service on the Phil Campbell High School football field. The pastors from two other Phil Campbell churches that were hit by the disaster were invited to speak as well. Pastor Sammy Taylor spoke on behalf of Mountain View Baptist Church, which was completely destroyed, and Pastor Tim Haney spoke on behalf of First Baptist Church of Phil Campbell which suffered significant damage.
