Trayvon Martin, Faith and Social Justice
A month after Trayvon Martin’s killing in Sanford, Florida, the call for justice – and social justice – continues growing. Some of the loudest voices have risen from faith communities to speak out against racial inequities and last Sunday, hoodies could be found in the pulpit, the pews and the choir loft. Many religious groups hope the tragedy may at least inspire conversation about injustice. The Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference (SDPC), an organization of progressive African American faith leaders, published “A Litany for Children Slain By Violence” and other advocacy materials to raise awareness. The SDPC’s General Secretary, Dr. Iva Carruthers, spoke with Odyssey Networks via Skype from Chicago and discussed the imperative to engage with social justice issues.

A Prayer for Spending Money - Your Daily Prayer - May 29
No one is immune to the negative hold that money can have on our hearts in plenty or in want. I am a spender. I like to shop and get new things. However, God has taught me throughout my life to pray about my spending and to listen to the still, small voices that lead me in my financial decisions. God desires us to live a life of generosity, putting God before money. We cannot serve both God and money.
