Senior officials from Iran and the big powers arrived in Istanbul ahead of Saturday's bid to restart stalled diplomacy after months of soaring tension and persistent speculation that Israel might bomb Iranian nuclear sites. The meeting is widely seen as a chance for the countries involved to halt a downward diplomatic spiral and to seek ways out of years of deadlock.

Geologists have nicknamed the Pacific Rim the "ring of fire" because of frequent volcanic and seismic activity. The rash of earthquakes sent shock waves of concern across the globe. Scientists said that the seismic activity was unusual and that the two quakes in Indonesia were on strike-slip faults which are the same type of faults located in California. Though the quakes did not do serious damage, experts said that it was a reminder to always be prepared.
