Something Smells Fishy
When my children were growing up, each night at bedtime I would read to them bible stories from “The Beginner’s Bible.” And “Jonah” was their favorite story. But as they grew up they began to have doubts: “How could a guy live inside a fish for three days,” they asked? It’s a good question, and it’s plagued grown-up bible readers, too -- including bible scholars -- for a long time. Search the Internet and you’ll find any number of outrageous attempts to “prove” that Jonah could live inside a fish, explanations that range from the miraculous survival of a giant 300-million year old “dunkleosteus” capable of swallowing a man, to God preparing a “special” fish -- apparently without digestive juices -- to accomplish the task.
