Powerful typhoon rips through N. Philippines (Second Coming Watch #371)

1. According to The New York Times, a powerful typhoon ripped through the northern Philippines on Monday, killing at least one person and lashing fragile mountain and coastal communities with winds gusting up to 210 kilometers per hour.

2. According to Ynet News, the Iron Dome defense system, deployed last month in Eilat, intercepted a rocket aimed at an inhabited area in the region. Shortly before 1 AM on Tuesday morning a siren was heard in Israel's southernmost city and residents reported they heard echoes of two explosions in the area.

3. According to the BBC, at least 44 worshippers have been shot dead at a mosque in north-eastern Nigeria. The killings took place during dawn prayers on Sunday, although news only emerged on Monday, as communications are disrupted by a state of emergency.

4. According to Agence France-Press (AFP), a Chinese poultry worker was confirmed as having contracted the deadly H7N9 bird flu virus, the first case in the southern Guang-dong province. The 51-year-old woman is in a critical condition after she was admitted to hospital following signs of a fever.

5. According to The Associated Press, Egyptian security officials say a clash between Christians and Muslims that saw homes and a church burned in a southern city have left 15 people wounded. Officials say the clash started Sunday when a Muslim tried to stop a Christian neighbor from building a speed bump in front of her home.
