I have to say that I don't agree with psalm9114's comment. By saying, "Do not love the world of the things of the world," John is saying don't love that things that are not of God and further goes on to say, "cravings, lust, and boasting." How can a person know whether a genre of music is or is not of God? Anything that is praising him, or rectifying his name is good. Anything that lifts of the Father and the Son is good. God created music, dancing, and I don’t think that a particular “type” of music can be said to be earthly. If people praise him by listening to music with a electric guitar and drums, or rock, how is that any different than a hymn that is praising and lifting to his name. John 17:15-18 15 I pray not that thou should take them out of the world, but that thou should keep them from the evil. 16They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. We are sent people, to share the gospel and yes we are not supposed to be of this world, BUT we shouldn’t be so far removed from it that people can’t relate to us. Just as Jesus says, “ I pray not that though should take them out of the world, but that thou should keep them from evil,” a type of genre that we listen shouldn’t be said to be earthly if it’s giving glory to God. In the song when it says, “Do not tell me what I Can and can not do when I rock,” he’s saying that we shouldn’t list to the World or the World’s View when we are living our ordinary life. Lots of people listen to rock, but while listening to it you don’t have to take on an earthly appearance, but you can listen to it and still give glory to God. That is what is meant when it is said, “to be not of the world but in it.” John Rueben’s message in the song is saying that everyone that fallows God is different; we are a people that are each unique and have different gifts. He is saying to be yourself, fallowing God, and not let the world change that. |
