I am an artist and an Interfaith Minister. As such I have teamed up with another artist who has built a memorial to survivors of abuse. The memorial is huge, standing thirteen feet tall by thirty feet wide and is cast in the bronze handprints of survivors. On the inside of the memorial there is room for one million handprints on paper. That is where I come in. I have been asking people to place their hand on a piece of paper, draw an outline of their hand and then on or around the handprint then write a message of how they want the world to be for children...or some people tell me their story with their handprint on top. I believe that the memorial is a collective prayer saying ... We need to be the best that we can be so that our children can be the best that we can be Through this work I hope to raise awareness and move people to respond. I have collected 3700 handprints to date and with the handprints I build installations in art galleries .. However, I need one million handprints. Child abuse is a human rights issue that needs addressing by changing minds, changing laws and changing the way we deal with survivors in the aftermath of what amounts to be a crime....please help me to help others.
