Greetings GodisLove1John416: Thank you for this clear exposition of Habakkuk's message. During your teaching I was struck again by the truth that God is mystery, and only in his own self-revelation can we understand what he is about. I was also reminded of 1 Peter 1's counsel: "So be truly glad! There is wonderful joy ahead, even though it is necessary for you to endure many trials for a while. These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold – and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world." Blessings, M.

To Dr. Dean: Thank you for not only taking the time to watch the video, but for commenting on it as well. I am sincerely grateful. And that you are concerned about my salvation, if you are sincere, is equally gratifying. This makes it only more difficult for me to tell you then, that you have not carefully viewed the video. What I actually said was the the sunset values concern Christendom and church-i-anity. Christianityâs values are not in view, these being very different ideas, Iâm sure youâll agree. The point of the video, as stated in the first paragraph, is faithful discipleship which calls for a radical (cutting to the root) reexamination of our core theology, not to meet the spirit of age, but rather to stand against it. Finally, and taking you seriously again at the risk of you being ironic, if the video scarred you, well, I donât know what to say about that, really. I mean, this is very tame compared to the death and destruction that awaits us every night with Katie Couric. I would say that if this is too much then the video may not have been for you.

To bornagaincatholic: Greetings bornagaincatholic -- glad to hear from you again! thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on the video. i agree with your comments. the protestant dilemma has always been how far to go toward the culture. the catholic church has never much felt the challenges of modernity. but again, you run the danger of increasingly speaking only to yourselves (theologically speaking, i mean: e.g. male only priests), but i donât get the idea that this is of any great concern for you. protestants, on the other hand, must (?) compete in the marketplace of ideas because we are marketing for members, and because the world of the supernatural is so much more closed for us than it is for you. catholics touch the supernatural through mary, the sacraments, angels, the saints, etc., while protestants do so only through the bible (unless you are speaking of the charismatic variety of protestants). this is why protestants fight so hard for a supernatural bible (read: inerrant, infallible). Blessings to you. MRP ( the video's producer)

Faith vs. Belief added: 191 days ago
Greetings bornagaincatholic: Thanks for you comment on my video âfaith vs belief.â I tried to understand what this video had to do with your question, but was unable to see the connection. (this, no doubt is my problem, not yours) However, your concern is very important, and one to which I have given considerable thought. This, of course, doesn't mean I have any answers -- in fact I have far more questions than answers -- but I will share my thoughts thus far on the journey. Please take them as coming from the "for whatever it's worth" department. Pope John Paul II wrote in "Restoring Faith In Reason" that, âThe Church...does not appeal only to Scripture by itself...the supreme rule of her faith arises from the unity created by the Spirit between the Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church, and these three all imply one another and cannot be separated from each other. (page 93) The former Pontiff wrote this as a description of the term âbiblicism,â the belief that makes truth only available within the TEXT, a view that jettisons modern scholarship (both sacred and secular), modern learning and a rational use of the mind (at least when it suits the biblicist). Of course, many religious people -- both Catholic and Protestant -- fear outside influences when it comes to their faith, and are deeply skeptical of them. However, in the main, I would agree that the Catholic church has done much better work integrating and navigating modernity. This may be true in part because of the three fold arbitrator of truth mentioned above. For Protestants, conservative ones anyway, if truth only comes from the TEXT, then that TEXT must be infallible so that one can trust what one is reading. Or, better put, how can one trust what one is reading if errors abound, one may have to actually have to work at interpretation! âTell it not in Gath!â Anyway, the Genesis discrepancy you cite is just a drop in the bucket! I have a book in my library entitled: âEncyclopedia(?!) of Bible Difficultiesâ by Gleason Archer (a biblicist). It is 434 pages long with double columns on each page! So what? In point of fact, for the Protestant there are two reasons that gives the TEXT authority -- no matter what is said about inerrancy or infallibility. (I am arguing here that this is what is actually practiced, no matter what one says.) First, the TEXT has authority because the particular, local context invests authority in the TEXT -- that is, it is believed to be sacred and is consequently treated as sacred. But why? The second reason is that somehow, sometime, (perhaps often?) the Spirit -- and here I would echo St. Paulâs description, the Spirit of the Risen Christ -- has indeed made himself known through the TEXT. That is, the TEXT blossoms, comes alive, revealing the ways and works of the Christ, in a voice that decidedly does not belong to the reader. Therefore, fallible or infallible, errant or inerrant must mean something else. I believe these terms are nothing more than ways to determine for which team youâre pitching. That is, it is a way to identify the other as friend or foe. From this I would also argue that we need not fear modernity; God did give us a brain and expects us to use it. But, we must not allow the use of reason and succumb to rationalism, for here we would be endanger of being lost to the spirit-of-the-age. And as one wag put it, âhe who marries the sprit-of-the-age will soon be found a widower,â or as another said, âhe who sups with the devil better have a long spoon.â Blessings to you, bornagaincatholic, and again, thanks for taking the time to view my video. Sorry for the length of this post. m
