Even So Come by Passion feat. Kristian Stanfill

Devo by Andrea Lucado

Without the promise of the coming of Christ, we would be hopeless. The suffering in the world, the pain, the injustice, the unholy wars—as soon as we think there is peace on this earth, a terrorist group arises or a natural disaster strikes and wipes out an entire community. With a 24/7 news cycle and the prevalence of social media, it is impossible to ignore the harsh realities of this world. Despite all of this, as Christians, we still have reason to hope.

Every heart longing for our King

We sing

Even so come,

Lord Jesus, come

In the book of Revelation we are told about the Second Coming, when Jesus the Prince of Peace will come back and restore the earth to a sinless creation. As the book closes, you can almost feel the angst in John, the writer’s, words. He says, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus!” (Rev. 22:20). Even then, people were ready for Jesus to come back. Even then, people suffered and wanted relief. But we are told to wait. As a bride waits for her bridegroom, we must wait.

Like a bride waiting for her groom

We’ll be a Church ready for You

If you have ever been a part of a wedding ceremony, you understand this type of waiting and anticipation. It builds throughout the day as the bride and groom get ready. They are separated from each other yet longing to be together. After hours apart, finally, the bride stands at the end of the aisle and sees her groom, and the groom, he sees his bride. Smiles, tears, hearts beating quickly. She walks down the aisle and everyone watching can’t wait until she is in the arms of her groom.

This is the type of anticipation deep in the heart of every believer. The longer we are on the earth, the more we long for our bridegroom Jesus, who will take us in his arms on that final day and assure us that the pain is over. “They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Rev. 21:3-4).

So we wait

We wait for You

God, we wait

You’re coming soon

In the meantime, we wait. We prepare our hearts. We read the Word and try to live its truth as best we can. Like a bride preparing herself for her wedding, we prepare. We are not stagnant. We do not stomp our foot and demand Jesus come back today. We find purpose and joy in waiting for our bridegroom, and we make straight a highway, a path for the Lord.
