I also find that we tend to use our Giftedness as an excuse for not serving in areas we are not gifted in. We are instructed in scripture to practice all of the spiritual gifts. I find in my life I just need to be ready to serve when ever and where ever God gives me opportunity.

@Peter: appreciate the comment, however, if God has gifted me a certain way, won't I be glorfiying Him (the giver) the most be using that which He gave me to use -- instead of some other task (that is probably someone else's). Therefore, I respectfully disagree, and I think the churrch is mum on this b/c it hard to discern and us eto the full the gifts He has for each of us individually. in the gentleman's example -- why does he assume that he can hear better than a lay person what their gifts are? maybe that piano player is supposed to play for the older person in his example. but, if they listened to this pastor, they would forget that gifting (piano) that God had spoken to them to do what he (the clergyman) thinks needs to be done. it is not about filling holes that the local church needs... it is about building up the fullness of the universal body that is Christ! and, if any man lacks wisdom, let that individual ask of God who will (and can) give graciously and without reproach. Blessings all!

They are called gifts because God gives to those who believe in Him and that He is the gift giver. Answering questions on paper does not begin to answer this question. This is just man's way of trying to either play God or manipulate people. It is as simple as asking Jesus into ones heart. When I received the power and knowledge of my spiritual gifts I did not even know what that meant! Friends of mine wanted whatever that was, bad enough, and seeking these gifts we went to a church that prayed with each individual to ask God for them. I was the one to receive, but I am sure after all these years sometime he and the other girls received this from God. No Doubt ~ doubting. Too many denominations are keeping people from receiving because of their legalistic point of views, and they will be held accountable for quenching the Holy Spirit.

Knowing what your particular spiritual gift(s) may or may not be is far less important than being meaningfully invested and involved in glorifying the giver of the gifts. Great thoughts from Mark Dever!

Amen. We pray to God to use us in any way He wants. We don't use God or His power to meet our own ends; we should be wiling to be used by God. Always.
