Christianity.com:Is the gift of speaking in tongues for today?-Zach Schlegel

Yes, the speaker in this video announces right away that speaking in tongues is relevant today IF it edifies the CHURCH. Here is what the Bible says: 1st Corinthians-14:4 "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church." As a born-again Christian, I would never stand in a public place (such as church) and edify myself! All things done are for the edification of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It's not about me, it's all about HIM!

I think it is a wonderful gift. I received the gift of tongues back in 1973, about a month after I surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus(got saved). Since that time I've incorporated it(praying in tongues) into my devotions in the morning and during the day when I'm traveling alone on business. I've found it helps me avoid sin, experience God's peace and get God's perspective on things. I don't look down on my brothers and sisters who haven't embraced tongues. Those who've received Jesus are just as much members of the Family of God as I am. It's just that I would like for them to have this precious "equipment" as well. As you know this World is not the most hospitable place for Christians, so as far as I'm concerned any gift that helps me get my mission done as a believer is a good thing.

Tom, you took the words right out of my mouth! Been making both points for years. Personally, I've heard too many testimonies of people who knew NOTHING about tongues, or Pentecostals or anything else...when they were filled with the Holy Spirit they began to spontaneously speak in tongues. One was a Jewish woman who had just heard about Jesus for the first time. Shortly thereafter she received Christ and was water baptized. She came out of the water speaking in tongues...had no idea what was going on, lol!

but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified. 6 Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? 7 Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8 Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9 So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10 Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11 If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me. 12 So it is with you. Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church...........................you need to make sense

You're Right....

What a bunch of blasphemy...tell the meek what you are saying, is the Holy Spirit hidden under a lamp-bowl.

I have been witness to speaking in tongues...with an interpretation,,, once in my life. It saved my life, praise to Jesus Christ. I went to a woman's Christian retreat in 1984...apx. 2400 women for 3 days...non-denominational... going simply to escape my bar business and my drunk husband, my life out of control. During Sat. night's praise and worship, at the climax of concert a woman in the balcony began to chant in a beautiful voice. I tried to identify the language as I know a little bit of several languages. The entire applauding audience stopped, as if mesmerized by what was happening. When the young woman stopped, an old lady about 4 rows ahead of me on the main floor, her teeth recently pulled (as she would say later, "...this old toothless grandma would never have spoken, but when the Spirit uses you, you wouldn't dare resist")gave this interpretation: "My children, follow not the ways of this world for they are false. They are not of Me and my world. But keep the flame burning within your hearts for I am coming like the rush of billowing wind. I am coming and soon. I am coming. Stay close together. Be ready. Do not fall apart but hold close to each other and give strength to each other." I was so convicted, and I kept thinking "I was so thirsty!" and couldn't understand why I was thinking that. The auditorium filed out quietly with many whispers and questions in small groups of women that I overheard. When I went back with our group to our dorm they met in a small meeting room to discuss what had just happened. Many felt it was "tongues" though one lady particularly, that I remember, thought it must be the devil. I stayed quiet and learned about the Bible and that it talks about tongues. I borrowed a Bible the next day on the way home and read 1 Corinthians 12-14...maybe more, I don't remember. But I was consumed by the Word and couldn't get enough of it. The following Monday I went to a Bible book store and bought my first Bible...and read the gospels. When I came to the story of the woman at the well (John4) I got goose bumps all over me when Jesus said to the woman, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." I finally knew why I was so thirsty :) Let this testimony open others' eyes at it did mine. I have not been a witness to tongues since...but I KNOW it happens. Maybe, like the world so often says, "You had to have been there."

These gifts were given to the disciples to spread the gospel and are not applicable today.

Mandy Falugo - Don't Forget The Spiritual Gift 0f Interpretating Tongues. Paul said "Pray That You May Interpret".

Paul Dancy - I was given The Spirit's Gift 0f Tongues on a thursday night Service 4 days after I was baptized on Resurrection sunday. I had no idea about Tongues. Thank God I had not heard those teach about tongues who didn't have it. And as I Pray To Interpret. Years ago I was given a prayer message for 'The Church' aloud. "Lord Sweep Through The Church 0f The Lakes" and He did. And that same message was pronounced by Prophet Kim Clement of God Sweeping Through The Churches. And people have wondered what has been happened to Churches all these days!

Jason Bump - Paul said he spoke with The Tongues 0f Men (languages) and The Tongues 0f Angels. Among The Dead Sea Scrolls is 'The Temple Scroll'. Written by The Priests 0f The First Temple who stood before God. They wrote of speaking in Tongues to God along with His Angels, Before Him.

The Apostle Paul said, in Spiritual Gifts; let it be for the Edification of The Church that You seek to Excel. And speaking in Tongues Edifies the speaker. And those who Prophesy are Greater than those who don't UN-Less one speaks in Tongues. How may I Edify others if they can not see that I myself am Edified Greater than them? Can a poor man help a poor man out of poverty?
