What if Starbucks Marketed Like a Church... A Parable

To me, the solution is simply being "real". Jesus was "real", i.e., he wanted water, he asked the Samaritan woman to draw water for Him, even though Jews would NEVER even speak to a woman, much less a Samaritan (someone considered 'less than'), PLUS even accepting a cup from the woman would make Him ceremonially unclean (Jewish custom), then He stayed TWO DAYS teaching the people of the area all about the Kingdom! (John 4:1-40) I can only imagine how the experience BLEW HER MIND! And THEN He explained to her that He was the LIVING WATER! They discussed their views on worship, they related to each other, HE WAS REAL...Back to the video... Notice how different folks in the "coffee shop" look around and even look at the newbies but they don't engage the newbies! They're 'into' the 'coffee scene'. In reality, the 'coffee scene' has nothing to do with what's actually going on. These newbies came looking for 'coffee', they were full of hope, they are not looking to be coffee robots, they are seeking genuine 'coffee'. Their needs simply weren't met and we all know they left feeling unsatisfied. We as believers need to take our eyes off of ourselves and our desires, and see people as the "REAL Barista" sees them; hurting, searching, needing, being REAL, then He invests time in them. We have been given the most precious Guide and instruction Book, so much more valuable than a video, we simply need to crack it open, read it, and then open our minds and be real. :)

I know that but new people don't always know this. Being new is HARD. I'd like to have seen some ideas in the video for people to connect and some solutions :)

the point is that the human experience is being ignored. each of the characters in this scene, were so intent on "converting" the new people into "starbuck's" coffee drinkers, they didn't even notice that the guy had been shoved in a corner and the girl needed to use the bathroom. witnessing isn't only about conversion. it is about sharing the message of christ's salvation...even if you happen to drink folger's.

I am trying to get it, but its kinda weird how they put it, I really don't get the mgs? is it trying ti make fun of churches?

commited bible study and hanging with people you know are saved

  • 2012-08-12T06:29:36

this is why bible study is soooo important and prayer the holy spirit can lead us in the right path

  • 2012-07-08T20:50:05

yup, this may explain why people don't come back to churches a second time. Quite uncomfortable.

  • 2012-07-04T12:29:57

I would say that the point is that todays' church certainly doesn't capture the essence of Jesus.

IAFSNV . . . "International Anointed First Starbucks of the Northern Valley" . . . (It's the name on the door when they go in)

Yes, because MARKETING!!! is what the Church needs. WHO COULD POSSIBLY NEED THE CHANGING POWER OF JESUS when you could have the dazzling power of MORE EFFECTIVE MARKETING?!!?!??!? I could only make it through about 5 minutes. The cleverness of the parody wasn't lost on me, and I had a few laughs, but what they were suggesting as a natural course of action just made me sick.

Does anyone note the irony of this video being on a site called GODtube? Wow.

  • 2012-06-28T19:10:40

Having been a newbie many times in church, this captures it well. However, I don't see where there was a solution.

What do the initials on the apron of the cashier mean? Is it an acronym? I've been trying to interpret them, but nothing has popped up. Any idea?

This video does seem to capture the miasma many of the established churches face. Good job shining a light, it may startle a few to see it for what it is. I'll agree with #Abigale below there are more than a few messages here, this should be viewed a few times to get all the messages.

Hmm, interesting. I'm always interested to know how we're doing it wrong , but then show me how to do it right. Maybe the next video should explain how church should be?
