Dear John by Mandisa in ASL

Acreationofgod - American Sign Language I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, or that you don't put any work into it, I'm saying there is a huge difference between American Sign Language and Signed Exact English. If you have studied the language then I shouldn't have to tell you what that is. All I was saying is that this should be labeled correctly, as it is misleading to uneducated hearing and insulting to the language and culture to not do so. No harm meant, just if you really DO understand what ASL is, then you should know what calling something that is clearly not ASL to anyone who knows and uses the language is not appropriate. Please approach this as it is, not as discouragement for someone who obviously has a passion for music and signing, but as encouragement to be culturally sensitive and appropriate when you use signed English to music. God Bless you too!

I am sorry that you don't agree but as a Child of my Lord and Savoir. I choose to listen to what He has told me to do. I have done sign language for almost 31 years. I also have studied a lot and put my heart and soul into these songs for the deaf. I allow God to teach me. I say as many words as possible. How do you know that I have not had any classes. God knows my heart and that I have many deaf friends and family. I listen to God. I will continue with what the Lord has told me to do and its ok if you don't like them. God is my protector, my strength, my hope, my everything. It is ASL. That's what I study. God bless!!

I truly felt blessed to watch you sign this song because both the words and your expressiveness translated the beauty of it - thank you. And it doesn't matter what you are signing in - beauty and meaning will always translate to the heart that can hear. Shalom

Beautiful!! My daughter and grandaughter sign to many songs for church, nursing homes (very effective to the elderly) and other places. They are very anointed with this gift and have had such an impact on the community. Don't ever let anyone discourage you for giving a gift that God gave you. Bless you!

With ALL due respect to the Deaf community, Beth's comment seems to be written from the unique viewpoint of the ASL interpreter who encounters these barriers EVERY DAY- and the advocacy they face to educate people who want the language and discard the people- and call themselves proficient at ASL when it's self-taught. The churches are FULL of people who mishandle ASL- and don't teach the CONCEPTS of the song. We can take ASL and make telling yourself to go jump off a cliff look visually appealing too. and make a mockery of the ASL language to those who don't know the difference.

Jann Patterson Nope, not stupid. Just commenting on the label of ASL. You, as a deaf person know the difference between ASL and Signed English. That was all the comment was geared towards, knowing the difference. :)

Deaf community not stupid. Understand poetry, song and artistic expression.

So awesome! This is one of my favorite songs on the new album:)

Ok, this won't win me any popularity contests, but I really wish this wasn't labeled American Sign Language. ASL is a beautiful, visual language, and is separate from English. This is, at best, Signed Exact English. There are no grammatical features, facial expressions, use of conceptual accuracy, etc. in this video. These things are an essential part of the language. This is sweet, and you can tell that you are passionate about the music, but please don't call this ASL.If we Christians are trying to reach the Deaf community, we need to learn the language that is actually used and the culture, and why the difference is so important to them. That would make a much bigger impact than this ever could. Keep working toward becoming a fluent signer and member of the community.
