Breathtaking! Jackie Evancho Sings With Her Older Brother - I See The Light

Jerry Textor, you have a point when you mention she's "hitting...correct pitches...with beautiful tone. I'll admit she's seems not to strain in her singing, which is one of the reasons I have some hope. Her tone is just so remarkable, ESPECIALLY at her age, and therefore so unusual, I worry for her, and probably will till she's 18-19. If she still has all her vocal "weapons" by then, I'll relax. You know, because so many people care what I think. ;-)

@David, I've never heard her speak. We all, with the rarest of exceptions, speak with our natural voice (without affectation or characaturization). Voice pedagogue Van Christy observed that, fundamentally, "singing is an extension of the speaking voice." So I might like to hear her speak some before I assume her tone is NATURAL. I'm not arguing it's not pretty, it's just so... weird (best word I can find, more negative than I mean) for a girl her apparent age. If she sounds like a 30-year-old when she speaks (tonally, not in speech mannerisms or language usage), I'll assume all is well. If not, someone's playing a dangerous game of vocal Russian Roulette with her.

Awww... I hope she's thick skinned..she's reading these you know :-D She will learn...I like it shows she is putting her heart into it...she could be lost in the song, and a little less performing. I like it.

good point, possibly... time will tell Michael. But still, I don't think we singers and/or teachers should be overly analytic, despite the points you made. Her super mature sounding voice is to be celebrated, if anything, IMO. Rare, yes. Not likely pointing to any future detriment, as I am hearing. Could it be she just has a nice, older sounding voice and she needs to enunciate more :) I personally love it.

what a God -given talent.

David, her tone has an odd, pseudo-mature coloration that's a bit of a wild card when trying to evaluate her vocally. No child her apparent age naturally produces a tone like that (or extraordinarily rarely), so my fear is that this probable affectation might in the long run be detrimental. As I said, I hope I'm fretting over nothing. The notes being within her range are not my concern; it's that affected tone. I suppose it's possible she's really a very short 34-year-old with a baby face and an authentically mature voice, but... I'm thinking, no. ;-)

"She will learn to calm down and not give herself whiplash over time :)" David Crocker, hopefully before she's fitted for a cervical collar. Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;-)

Michael, I was an instrumental music ed major in college, but I sang in choir and took a few vocal pedagogy classes. I feel Jackie has a beautiful voice, clear sound for a singer of her age, maybe some of her enunciation could use a little work. I don't have a critical ear to hear all the nuances, but she's hitting 99% of the correct pitches (with a beautiful tone) Her work performed in Italian is tremendous. What's more amazing is how this young lady can draw the listener into the world of the music. Her projection of the emotion is amazing. My concern for her is over working her voice at her age. I hope she has vocal coaches looking out for her best interests, and I pray she's willing to listen to the counsel they provide. If her voice can hold out she has a promising future as a singer.

This is absolutely fabulous! No one said she had a brother... I love her, love her! Listen and you will be so blessed! and she is only 12. Don't know how old the brother is! I am in awe! Please listen! Blessings!

I know what you mean...I couldn't understand her either, but he was great

Agree about the constant head twitching!!

  • 2012-09-25T20:48:55

I disagree...she's still learning to portray passion and to live the song. Her brother sings and performs beautifully, to be sure. But IMO you are being too hard on her. She will learn to calm down and not give herself whiplash over time :) But her tone and style and heart into the song are rare for her age, and for anyone actually. Yes the voice is weird to connect with her little girl appearance, but amazing and to me, she is the one who stands out here. but her brother is also very good, and will only get better.

Michael Mays Wow, its funny because as a singer and worship leader, I love her brother's's right there tonally and range wise, where you want it to be and more, for his age..when did his voice change, like a week before this video lol? But very controlled and a nice sound to it. But as for Jackie, her voice blew me away! Like you said Michael, quite big for her age...thats what amazed me, and obviously as much natural talent and gifted tone, as training...but I don't see her voice "going bad", as she seems to stay within herself and i didn't hear her strain even once. Even her fast vibrato was very cool, which isn't always the case. His voice to me was very nice, and his skills made it even better. But she has, to my ears, the tone and presence and passion..everything that makes it WOW.

If you have trouble with it starting and stopping, just click the pause button, go do something else while it finishes loading, and then when it finishes loading you'll be able to see it w/out the interruptions.
