to Ms. Gail Holladay, with due respect, as a nurse i would like to inform you that CP affects only the body and not the mind. The kid with CP must have expressed his desire to wrestle that's why the parents conceded. Parents of children with CP are very protective and i am 100% sure that they didn't do that to just "display" their child. They did that so that he would feel as normal as every 12 y.o in his community. In nursing psychology, we teach parents how to deal with their children's diseases according to their ability to grasp and understand the situation and call it "age appropriate" approach and at 12 y.o teens need to develop a sense of self and personal identity. Success leads to an ability to stay true to yourself, while failure leads to role confusion and a weak sense of self (Erik Erickson). Don't just chastise the parents without understanding what they're going through.

That young man IS a great man and may he gain God's grace for his actions. 1 Peter 5:5 "Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Gail, I have a son with cp and he loves to do everything that everyone else does. You are the type that wants to see the handicapped put in a room and hidden. SHAME on you for your comments.

I don't understand the reasoning behind having a child that disabled on a wrestling team? What can that possibly do for his self-esteem?

  • 2012-12-06T12:42:02

A child in that position quite possibly wanted to do that. What kind of parents would they be if they denied their child that one pleasure that might, for that shining moment, make that young man with cp feel as tall and as might as the stars? I don't see it, just from this mind you, as putting anyone on display. I see it as a moment in humanity caught on film that might give our future generations a look to the other side of those labeled in future history as barbaric, war mongering Americans, and that some of us still had heart and soul no matter out limitations or abilities.

Maybe, just maybe, that young man wanted to wrestle just one time. Maybe there is a positive way to look at this. Maybe, just maybe, these parents gave their son an opportunity to do something 'normal'. Let's look for the good, pure, godly in the situation.
