Love & War (Bonus Track Version)
BarlowGirl
The three Barlow sisters stay on a steady course with 2009’s Love & War. The sleek vocal harmonies and aggressive tempos that have long been their signatures are again used to drive home the trio’s uncompromising Christian faith. As on previous releases, BarlowGirl strives to inspire believers in galvanizing rockers like “Come Alive” and “Open Heavens.” They address their own struggles to resist selfishness in “Beautiful Ending” and tear into the materialist distractions of the world in “Time for You to Go.” Sisters Rebecca, Alyssa and Lauren are especially appealing when they apply their vocals to buoyant Beatles-esque melodies — “Hello Sunshine” and “Our Worlds Collide” serve up their spiritual messages with soufflés of pure pop joy. Emphasizing the album’s title theme, “Love Is Marching” is a sweet yet stately hymn aimed at a rising generation of prayer warriors. “Tears Fall,” a blues-shaded piano ballad, tackles the issue of abortion with a sense of outrage tempered by humility.
