This attraction has an interesting history. Did you know, for example, that a significant model for this was made with an erector set? Source:The Imagineering Field Guide to Epcot at Walt Disney World An Imagineer's-Eye Tour By:The Imagineers Page: 67

The following is a reply to stormbreaker's comment that reads as follows: "First of all, to all those who say evolution hasn't been observed, that's a lie. Bacteria are the fastest reproducing form of life, and evolution of bacteria has clearly been observed in laboratories all over the world. The only reason we can't easily observe it with other species is because of the fact that it takes a very long time for a distinguishable form of evolution to take place. Second of all, I have a fun documented fact for all those who deny our ascendancy from creatures that lived in the sea. Humans, when in the womb, initially have a tail and gills. This is in one of the very early stages, and eventually we grow in such a way that we lose them, but deny it or not, this is true, and proven. You had a tail at some point in the womb, just like everybody else." There is some pretty big statements made in there that I want to reply to. The first thing I would like to respond to is "First of all, to all those who say evolution hasn't been observed, that's a lie. Bacteria are the fastest reproducing form of life, and evolution of bacteria has clearly been observed in laboratories all over the world. The only reason we can't easily observe it with other species is because of the fact that it takes a very long time for a distinguishable form of evolution to take place." Actually that statement is false. I believe what the person is reffering to is called genetic recombination. This is where bacteria exchange DNA information which can be done several different ways. One way is for a bacterium, that has something that would help another bacterium, to actually duplicate the DNA for that trait and to give the other bacterium the duplicated DNA. Now the second bacterium does have more information, but not because it came from nowhere. It was already in the first bacterium. Another way genetic recombination can happen is when a bacterium dies its DNA breaks into small pieces. Another bacteria that comes by it can actually know if any of thos pieces would be helpful for it, and then absorb the DNA that it needs. Isn't God amazing. He can actually use bacteria to recycle old bacteria's DNA! The last part says, "Second of all, I have a fun documented fact for all those who deny our ascendancy from creatures that lived in the sea. Humans, when in the womb, initially have a tail and gills. This is in one of the very early stages, and eventually we grow in such a way that we lose them, but deny it or not, this is true, and proven. You had a tail at some point in the womb, just like everybody else." This is actually not "true, and proven". It is actually quite the opposite. I believe this is a reference to the "biogenetic law" which basically is the belief that, as a human goes through different stages in his (or her) mother's womb he (or she) is actually going back through his (or her) evolutionary ancestry (the biogenetic law, by the way, is only one name for this belief. It is also called "embryonic recapitulation" and "ontogeny"). This idea is false. The "gills" mentioned are not truly gills. They are actually "pharyngeal clefts" or "throat pouches" which have nothing to do with breathing. The middle ear canals, parathyroid glands, and the thymus gland is what they will develop into.
