image well, the whole statue thing, well I see it as kind of pagan. Becuase many pagan cultures have statues to represent who they are praying to and some pray to the statue and some pray to what the statue represents. And as you probably know, God didn'twant his people to worship in anyway that resembled the worship of pagans, so it would seem to me that praying to a saint in the presence of their image is mimicing pagan rituals and it is pushing the boundary on idolatry.

image Well, it's all fine for you not to pray to a saint. It's not like it's a requirement, even for Catholics. I know plenty that don't bother praying to anyone but God. The misunderstandings and confusion between Catholics and others come from the use of differing definitions of the word "pray". I bet, when you pray, you always consider it worship. This is probably always the way it's been for you, and you'd have extreme difficulty separating your prayer from your worship. It makes perfect sense, and it's not a bad thing, even if you were a recent convert to Catholicism. For me, though, it's an every day thing to separate my prayer from my worship, and I can therefore do it pretty much without thinking about it. ---On your problem with using a statue/image, exactly what is the problem with? Is it that there is a statue at all, or is it that the attention appears to be on the statue? ...though if you don't want to discuss that, then that's cool. :)

image I don't really see it as wrong because, as long as it doesn't turn into worship(which can happen, but doesn't often), it's not really spoken out against in the bible. A lot of people argue that they are dead, and therefore can't hear you, and if you believe in soul sleep(dunno if you do), then to you, they would be dead. But I don't. I think that they're in heaven - alive and well with God. I don't need to pray to saints, but I also don't need to go running every morning(ugh!). I think it still helps. I have to divert the subject just a tad here - I think it'll help a little. For Catholics, EVERYONE in heaven is a saint. But it's hard to know exactly who is in heaven. So, we have a canonization process. When someone is canonized a saint, that pretty much means "hey, we know this guy is in heaven now". You get canonized if 2(I think it used to be 3. dunno why it was changed) postmortem miracles, Vatican approved as real, occur that involve the person in question. Obviously, satan can't perform wonderfully positive miracles like unexplained healings and such, since a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. So, we don't just pray to anyone. Now, back on track. A normal prayer from me usually starts with me thanking God for the positive things in my life, asking Him for help in certain areas, and asking Him to watch over the people most important to me. Then I'll go to Joseph and ask him to do what he can to help me become a better man - essentially to become more like him, since he is certainly a (step)father that should be emulated. Then I turn to Mary and ask her to do the same, except for my future wife. I don't know exactly what they can do. It may only be to pray to God on my behalf(in which case, when I ask Joseph to help me become a better man, obviously he wouldn't actually help - he would just pray to God, asking Him to make me a better man). Part of me wants to think that they can do more than pray for me, but I'm unsure on that part. It seems silly to think that a demon can directly influence us on earth(through possession), and yet a saint in heaven can't. But in the end, I'm just not sure how much help it is, I'm just confident that they can hear me and they can pray for me to God. I do know that my life has certainly changed for the better as a result. And, I've seen many many people pray to St. Anthony(patron saint of lost things), and as a result, have found whatever they lost. The amount of times that such prayer has worked is just mindboggling to me. Now, as a psychologist, I understand that it is possible that it is a purely psychological effect, but if something morally positive happens as a result(I become a better man), I don't see how that can be a bad thing(once again, good fruit can't come from a bad tree). So, this is more than a page long in word. I wonder if it will all post. If so, sorry for the really really long comment.

image It seems that hitting the "reply to comment" button, doesn't actually notify you that I'm responding to you, so, here's my reply, copied and pasted: Here's hoping this gets to you. I'm not exactly sure what the "reply to comment" option specifically does. Anyways, perhaps you could specify a little bit? Do you mean specifically prayer to saints? or all of it jumbled together? Also - thank you for asking nicely! All to much do people make accusations in a spiteful sounding way. I always thought it wasn't hard to ask nicely, so it's really frustrating when so many people don't, and it makes me(and many others) less receptive to what they have to say too. So, it is very refreshing to get a polite inquiry. :)
