Victory in Jesus - A Call to Obedience

Growing up in a Christian home, I heard all about the victory that we can find in Jesus Christ. In church, we sing about our "Victory in Jesus" and, it is true, Christ has won the victory over sin and death through His death, burial, and resurrection. Somewhere along the way, however, a shift took place in the way I think about victory. Instead of referring to Christ's victory, I often use the term to discuss my own personal struggles with sin in my life. Victory and defeat in the face of temptation has become a common theme in Christianity today. While, there is nothing inherently wrong with using these terms, they have led many of us to a skewed understanding of a believer's struggle with sin.
Jerry Bridges said it this way -
"Our problem is that our attitude toward sin is more self-centered than God-centered. We are more concerned about our own 'victory' over sin than we are about the fact that our sins grieve the heart of God."
